Schwarz Funeral Home in O’Fallon, Illinois, began in 1894 when Mathias Schwarz purchased the undertaking and furniture business of Charles Ruedlin. Mr. Schwarz was born 13 May 1860 in the area of Germany then called Wuertemberg, and settled in O’Fallon, Illinois in 1873. His children took over the business in 1919. In 1946 Wolfersberger Funeral Home purchased the undertaking business and preserves this and additional original Schwarz Funeral Records at its facility, 102 West Washington, O’Fallon, Illinois 62269.

Dates in the record were written out in full. The year was added for clarity. A color recorded for casket refers to a piece of cloth or fabric. Vater is German for Father. Carbon is one place name mentioned in this record and probably refers to the small rural community near O’Fallon. Place names recorded in this record might be further identified in James N. Adams, compiler, Illinois Place Names (Springfield, Ill. : Illinois State historical Society, 1989). The file includes an introduction and additional abbreviations key.
